# Decision-Making

We want decisions to happen as close to the work as sensible.

For significant decisions, use an informed captain. The captain is the person responsible for gathering the relevant context and views, then making the call.

This avoids two bad extremes:

* top-down approval for everything
* endless consensus where nobody is quite sure who decided anything

The bigger and harder-to-reverse a decision is, the more discussion and written reasoning it deserves. Small, reversible decisions should move quickly.

Disagreement is useful before a decision. After the decision, commit to it unless new information changes the case. If the bet was wrong, learn quickly and change course without turning the post-mortem into a hunt for who to blame.
