# Development

> Growth mostly happens through the work. “Success *is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.”*

Big challenges, new responsibilities, useful feedback, exposure to strong colleagues and deliberate learning will usually teach more than an abstract career plan disconnected from reality.

The company and your lead are responsible for creating context, feedback and opportunities to grow. You are responsible for engaging with them.

That can mean:

* getting better at your craft
* improving judgment and communication
* learning an adjacent discipline
* taking ownership of larger problems
* becoming a stronger individual contributor
* learning to lead people
* teaching others what you know

Management is not the only form of progression. Becoming exceptionally good at the work is a career path too.
